Hyaluronic Acid 101: Why Hydration Is the Foundation of Every Routine

THE ARTICLE

You can layer on every active ingredient in the book, but if skin isn’t properly hydrated underneath, none of them will perform the way they’re supposed to.

Hyaluronic acid has become shorthand for "hydrating skincare," and for once, the popularity is earned. It’s one of the few ingredients that’s both naturally present in skin and remarkably well tolerated by nearly every skin type — which is why it shows up in everything from serums to the moisturizer you already own.

01

What It Is, Without the Marketing

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally occurring molecule found throughout skin, joints, and connective tissue, where its job is to retain water and keep tissue cushioned and pliable. It’s a humectant , meaning it draws moisture toward itself rather than sealing it in and it can hold many times its own weight in water. About half of the body’s total hyaluronic acid lives in the skin, but levels decline steadily with age and UV exposure, which is a major contributor to skin looking less plump over time.

02

Dehydrated Is Not the Same as Dry

Dry skin lacks oil; dehydrated skin lacks water and you can have oily, acne-prone skin that is still dehydrated underneath. Dehydration shows up as fine lines that look more pronounced by the end of the day, a dull or tight-feeling complexion, and skin that looks flat rather than luminous. It’s especially common in dry climates, which is part of why hydration deserves more attention than it usually gets.

03

Molecular Weight, Briefly

Not all hyaluronic acid behaves the same way. High-molecular-weight HA sits on the skin’s surface, forming a hydrating film. Low-molecular-weight HA is small enough to penetrate deeper into the epidermis. Well-formulated products typically blend both surface-level hydration plus deeper reinforcement.

04

Why It Matters Even More When You Use Retinol

Retinol accelerates cell turnover, and during the adjustment period that can temporarily compromise the skin barrier leading to the dryness and flaking many people experience when they first start. Hyaluronic acid helps offset that by keeping the surface hydrated while retinol does its work underneath, which is why the two are so often formulated together rather than sold as competing products.

05

How to Actually Use It

Apply to damp skin. Because HA draws in moisture, applying it to bone-dry skin in a low-humidity environment can occasionally pull water from deeper layers instead of the air. Damp skin gives it something to grab onto.

Always seal it with a moisturizer. HA on its own can evaporate along with the water it’s attracted. A layer of moisturizer on top locks that hydration in rather than letting it lift off the skin.

Hydration is the layer everything else in a routine depends on which is exactly why it’s built into Urban Wellness Advanced Retinol Moisturizer rather than left for a separate step.
