THE WELLNESS GUIDE
A useful test for any routine: could I still do this on a bad day? If not, simplify until you can.
Consistency beats intensity. This guide walks through how to layer skincare steps, time your supplements, and build sustainable habits that compound over months and years — not just days.
The Principle: Consistency Beats Intensity
An ambitious ten-step regimen followed for two weeks does less than a three-step routine followed for a year. Intensity feels productive, but it's fragile — it depends on motivation, which fluctuates. Consistency depends on design: routines simple enough to survive your busiest day.
Structuring Your Skincare
Skincare layering follows one simple rule: thinnest to thickest. Water-light products first, richer creams last.
Morning:
- Cleanse (or simply rinse, if your skin is dry or sensitive)
- Antioxidant serum, if you use one (vitamin C is the classic choice)
- Moisturizer
- Sunscreen — broad-spectrum SPF 30+, every day, regardless of weather
Evening:
- Cleanse — this one matters at night, to remove sunscreen and buildup
- Treatment step (retinol, on the nights you use it)
- Moisturizer
That's it. A complete, evidence-aligned routine is four steps in the morning and three at night. Everything else is optional refinement.
Two layering notes: Keep vitamin C in the morning and retinol at night — they're a great team on opposite shifts. And if you use exfoliating acids, alternate them with retinol nights rather than stacking them.
Timing Your Supplements
Supplement timing is simpler than most marketing suggests, and the honest answer for most of them is: the best time is the time you'll remember.
- Creatine (3–5g daily): Timing has minimal effect — saturation is what matters, and saturation comes from daily consistency. Taking it with a meal may modestly help uptake, but the real strategy is anchoring it to something you already do daily: morning coffee, breakfast, or your post-workout shake.
- General rule for any daily supplement: Attach it to an existing habit rather than a clock time. Habits anchored to other habits survive schedule changes; habits anchored to "3 PM" don't.
The Mechanics of Habit-Building
A few principles from behavioral research make routines dramatically more durable:
Anchor new habits to existing ones. "After I brush my teeth, I apply retinol." "When I make coffee, I take my creatine." The existing habit becomes the reminder — no willpower required.
Reduce friction. Keep products where the habit happens. Skincare next to your toothbrush, creatine next to the coffee maker. A routine you can see is a routine you'll do.
Start smaller than feels necessary. One new habit at a time, at a modest dose of effort. Add the next layer only after the first feels automatic — usually a few weeks.
Track loosely, not obsessively. A simple calendar check-mark is enough. The goal is noticing streaks, not grading yourself.
Miss once, never twice. Skipped days are inevitable and harmless. What breaks routines is letting one missed day become a missed week. The rule is simple: never miss twice in a row.
Thinking in Seasons, Not Days
Set your expectations to the timelines the research actually uses:
- Weeks 1–4: The habit-forming phase. Results are minimal; the win is showing up.
- Weeks 4–12: Early visible changes — skin texture, training performance, tone.
- Months 3–12: Where compounding happens. This is the timeframe every meaningful study measures, and where routines quietly outperform intensity.
Take a photo, note your lifting numbers, or jot how your skin feels at the start. Progress that accumulates gradually is easy to miss without a baseline.
Build the smallest routine you can sustain, anchor each step to something you already do, and judge results in months. Skincare layered thin-to-thick, supplements taken at whatever time you'll remember, and a "never miss twice" rule —that's the whole system. It isn't glamorous, but it's what the evidence rewards: not the perfect routine, but the repeated one.
